New Circular Provides Clarity on Compliance and Implementation Dates
In a recent circular, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has issued important updates regarding the standardization of charging ports for smartphones and electronic devices, which includes the approval of updated standard specifications (SASO IEC 62680-1-2:2017, SASO IEC 62680-1-3:2017) and the unification of charging port types for smartphones and electronic devices. This follows earlier communications dated May 15, 2024, and July 8, 2024, which addressed the approval of updated standard specifications and application dates.
The latest circular reflects SASO's response to challenges faced by manufacturers and importers in implementing the affected standards. To ease compliance, SASO has clarified that a test report in accordance with the SASO IEC 62368-1:2020 standard will suffice for compliance verification. Additionally, companies can provide a self-declaration of conformity within their technical files, committing to adhering to the new charging port standards and performance requirements.
A notable aspect of the new guidelines is the introduction of a one-year grace period, commencing January 1, 2025. This period allows manufacturers to prepare for compliance and ensures that they can provide the necessary documentation before the standards are enforced. SASO has committed to reviewing the decisions after the grace period to assess the overall readiness of the parties involved.
SASO emphasizes the importance of including self-declaration in the product's technical files to facilitate smooth compliance with the new regulations. This proactive approach aims to streamline the transition to standardized charging ports, benefiting both consumers and manufacturers by enhancing safety and compatibility across electronic devices.
