SASO Clarifies Certification Requirements for Smart Watches

SFDA updated COC Testing List introduces new controls on powder-based, aerosol, and selected cosmetics

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has issued new guidance regarding the certification of smart watches that incorporate a mobile phone SIM card and a camera. The clarification follows the activation of the relevant HS code on the SABER platform and confirms that these products may be imported into Saudi Arabia, subject to compliance with applicable requirements

According to SASO's circular, Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) must carefully review product documentation and technical specifications before issuing a Certificate of Conformity. Certification should only be granted to commercial smart watches that comply with the relevant technical requirements and do not contain prohibited surveillance or espionage features.

To support the assessment process, SASO has also released a technical guide explaining how commercial smart watches can be distinguished from restricted devices. The guide emphasizes the importance of evaluating the nature of the product, its characteristics, and its intended functionality as part of the conformity assessment process.

What This Means for Exporters

Manufacturers and exporters planning to supply smart watches to the Saudi market should ensure that their products are supported by complete and accurate technical documentation. Products may require additional review to verify that they meet applicable regulatory requirements and do not include prohibited features.

Understanding these requirements early can help companies avoid delays during the certification process and facilitate a smoother route to market.
