SASO to implement Restriction of Hazardous Substances in EEEs soon

SASO to start implementing the regulation for Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) for electrical and electronic equipment (EEEs) and devices on January 5th, 2021.

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) announced the implementation of Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS).

Starting on January 5th, 2022, manufacturers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEEs) and devices must comply with the mandatory testing for six restricted substances, including lead and mercury.

This requirement is based on an update on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Technical Regulation issued by SASO in July 2021. The update specifically affects the scope of the following Technical Regulations:

  • Machinery Safety
  • Low Voltage Electrical Equipment and Appliances
  • Telecommunication Devices

In addition, the update brings RoHS in EEEs and devices exported to Saudi closer to the limits imposed by the European Union.

Some of the products affected by the updated regulation include small and large household appliances, lighting equipment, sports and recreational equipment. However, products like some medical devices, large scale and fixed, are exempted.
