SFDA Warning on Methyl N - Methyl anthranilate

As a trusted partner of the Saudi Arabian government we would like to share with you an ingredient warning received from SFDA regarding cosmetics containing Methyl N - Methyl anthranilate.

In reference to the Royal Decree No. (M/49) and its implemented regulations, the Saudi Food and Drugs Administration (SFDA) has announced an important update regarding Methyl N -Methyl anthranilate.

Indeed, after reviewing the available evidence and studies on the safety of the substance, it was observed that there is a causal relationship between the use of products containing the said substance and the occurrence of photo-toxicity cases when exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun.

For this reason, SFDA has requested that as of 1st of January 2022, all manufacturers and importers of cosmetics products should apply to the following:

  1. It is prohibited to add (Methyl N -Methyl anthranilate (MNM)) permanently to Sunscreen products because of their direct exposure.
  2. It is allowed to use Methyl N - Methyl anthranilate (MNM) in cosmetic products that remain on the skin (leave-on), not exceeding 0.1% as a maximum.
